YouTube Fitness Challenge: 90 Days


It has been a while since I finished my boot camp and I have to confess, I have let myself go. It is so easy to be lazy. I was feeling sooo good. I felt stronger, happier and I had more energy. When you energy level is down, that is the time you really need to exercise.

I do not do these workouts to get a “perfect body” by any means because that is not what is important. I am doing this to feel betterPlease join me on this quest to get active and change bad habits into good.

I have heard that it takes 90 days to create change that lasts. Change is hard! If you will endure 90 days with me, I promise that you will feel better and your body will thank you!

I am committing to do a youtube or alternative exercise everyday for 90 days excluding Sundays. My husband is sweet enough to do this with me. Neither of us are morning people, but everyday one of us will drag each other out of bed. If you have no disipline like me, and don’t have a partner to do this with.. Let me be your partner!

I will share my workout and other tips everyday with you with a brief summary so you know what to expect. Please share with your goals, thoughts, struggles, and triumphs. 

Lets become fit and happy and accomplish something great together!

Day 1
Goal 6am start {of coarse 6:35am came for a slow start}
Workout: 25 minute HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)

Cool Down: Roll out with Foam Roller
Lets face it, I am not in shape. Afterwards I just laid on the ground in a pile of my own sweat.

Workout: Swim Laps and Treading Water (chose an alternative youtube video like this one)
You tube is great but It’s important to get sunshine too. Don’t be too strict with yourself, if you do something active that gets your heart rate up for at least 20 minutes, count it! I went swimming today and decided that laps would be a nice low impact workout for the day.
Cool Down: Light swimming

I got two 5 pound Kettle bells to workout with at home. I like them a lot more than free weight dumbbells and they are nice and small to store. There are so many things that you can do with them!

Leg Burnout really is the two best words to describe this video. This guy is crazy strong. My husband was able to do it all , but I had to replace all the jumping jacks with other things like couch dips, crunches, and burpies. Maybe on day 90 I will try to do it straight through with no exercise modifications.

This is a good arm and all over workout. I think that I would need heavier kettle bells to make this a higher calorie burning workout as it says, but that isn’t my goal. It felt good just to get up and move!

Beauty Sleep Techniques


We all know how important it is to get our beauty rest, but why is it so hard to get to sleep? We may not clinically be diagnosed with insomnia but night after night the mind races and it is so hard to get to sleep. We find ourselves on Social Media Networks or on the Television waiting to get tired but it doesn’t ever work. Here are some tips to calm your body and mind before bedtime and get some real beauty rest!

  1. Start a routine and stick to it. Your body’s natural clock will adjust if you practice discipline. Once you are in bed, don’t get out.
  2. Increase sunlight in your day. Your body clock is assisted by natural sunlight. Increase your outside time and once its dark, your body will naturally get sleepy.
  3. Invest in a cheap sleep mask to create darkness, I like the heavy ones like this. If noise is an issue get silicone moldable earplugs too.
  4. Write tomorrows to-do list before laying down.
  5. Implement a “wind-down” time. This is important. Give yourself a repetitive way to wind down. Make this your “me-time”. For example, read a Book, go on a walk, take a hot bath, or drink some herbal tea and take some Melatonin, then brush your teeth. Give your body a trigger to know that it is bedtime and get a little break from day to day stressors.
  6. Reduce Screen time for 1 hour before bedtime. Screens will stimulate the brain and will make it difficult to slow your thoughts.
  7. Charge your phone in the kitchen and buy a separate Dream Machine Alarm Clock to avoid late night social media and other sleep-impeding habits
  8. Write in a journal to purge trapped thoughts and emotions, or even doodle for 10 minutes. This book can also be your bedside dream journal.
  9. Practice meditation or trace the cursive letters of the word sleep with your mind (easier than counting sheep?
  10. Use a Heating Pad on the place that your body carries stress, mine is the low neck and shoulders, the lowest setting. Works like a dream.

On the rare days that I don’t get enough, I try hard to get at least a 20-30 minute nap in the afternoon. That’s a big help.”

Treating Acne


Acne is frustrating but Accutane should be your last resort because it is so harsh on the skin and body. Here is a little information on acne to help you treat your skin at home.

What causes breakouts? Most say dirt and oil.. but why? BECAUSE it traps bacteria that lives in pores and gives it a nice anaerobic environment (no oxygen) to flourish in. Inflammation can do the same thing! {see hormonal acne below}

First you need to identify what is causing your acne. To do so, asses what part of your face is affected. Typically, you can tell what is going on by where it is located. Here are some examples:

Chin and Back- Hormonal (women)

Get nerdy with me for a moment and imagine this. Every 28 days or so your body goes through its regular cycle. During this, your body’s hormone levels change Hello PMS. Anyway, during ovulation your male hormones {androgens} spike. This causes a micro- inflammatory  response in the beard area and in the back. This inflammation actually closes off the pores trapping the bacteria that would otherwise not cause a breakout.

It takes a week or two for this bacteria to cause a pimple once the inflammation has occurred. That is why during your period, acne is at its worst.

So knowing this, what you need to do is use a Medicated Acne Lotionwith Benzoyl Peroxide (that oxidizes the closed off pores) during and right after ovulation. My favorite one is from Image because it is a nice light moisturizer that you use at night.

To Prevent: Use your Benzoyl Peroxide on the entire face  once daily for a week starting at ovulation. Use Ovulation Tests if you don’t know when that is.

To Treat: Spot treat with the same Benzoyl Peroxide Lotion

Proactiv has Benzoyl Peroxide in it and that is why it works for people suffering from hormonal acne. The problem with it is people overuse it! Once your face clears, stop using it because it is too harsh to be using all the time and can cause inflammation leading to more acne. Vicious cycle.

  • Use Medicated Acne Lotion
  • Do not over scrub, be as gentle with your acne as possible.
  • Reduce inflammation by touching less.
  • Use cool water for your final rinse.
  • If its still not working, try not eating dairy and processed foods for a month to reduce overall inflammation in the body.


Cheeks- Cosmetic, Hormonal, Cell Phone

  • Make sure to be using pump foundations, this limits the chance that the foundation can be contaminated.
  • Clean your brushes daily if you are suffering from severe acne.
  • Clean your cell phone with lysol wipes.
  • Wash your pillowcase frequently or invest in a pack to rotate them out.
  • Use a Clarisonic facial brush to cleanse thoroughly.

Bridge of Nose/Temples – Glasses/Sunglasses

  • Clean glasses daily.

Forehead – Cosmetic

  • Make sure to be using pump foundations, this limits the chance that the foundation can be contaminated.
  • Clean your brushes daily if you are suffering from severe acne.
  • Use a Clarisonic facial brush to cleanse thoroughly.

Hairline – Sweat/Workout

  • Wash face or targeted area twice daily with this making sure to get up into the scalp.
  • Use a Clarisonic facial brush to cleanse thoroughly.

Personal Training Tips


A few months ago, I did a boot camp at EXL Fitness. During the orientation I learned some invaluable training tips.

Matt, the owner/trainer has a “one habit at a time” motto. As with anything, if you bite off more than you can chew, it’s harder to swallow. 3 Nutritional Tips he had for me while working out were:

  1. Eat your body weight in grams of protein everyday to have enough fuel to build,repai muscle tissue and to burn fat. (if you are more than 30 lbs overweight, only eat your target weight in grams)
  2. Rotate your diet from High Carb Day(carbs with every meal), then Low Carb Day (body weight in carbs) and then No Carb Days (high protein, no carb). 
  3. Most importantly, before, during or immediately after your workout, drink a recovery drink that has a 2:1 Carb:Protein Ratio.Kefir, Protein Shakes with the correct Ratio or even Low-Fat Chocolate milk. THIS IS MANDATORY for gaining muscle quickly because without the correct fuel to build the muscle and burn fat, your body will actually break down its own muscle to use it as fuel and it will be as though you didn’t work out at all!
