Brighten Your Smile

This last winter I discovered a wonderful trick. I was juicing a lot of green drinks and was drinking a lot of Bronco Tea to help with the Flu (side note* this is the best when you have a sore/throat or cold -just don’t drink 4 cups a day or your teeth will do what mine did- read on). One night I noticed that all the greens and tea I had been drinking was staining my teeth!

I tried switching toothpastes (didn’t work), so I got a Sonicare
(it helped a lot), then I tried adding baking soda (being careful not to over do it and ruin the enamel) but still my teeth were a little stained.

This is what finally worked!! My mom recommended that I get some Activated Charcoal. She told me to break one of the capsules open and put the charcoal dust on my toothbrush. Then give em’ a good brushing.

I looked like someone out of a horror film while I was doing it because my saliva turned jet black.

My teeth felt like I had just got my braces off and got a good cleaning. They were lickably smooth! I love this trick.

How long do you leave the charcoal on your teeth? How many times per week can do the charcoal brushing?

      Hi Pat!
How long? I brush the same amount of time that I would with toothpaste. How often? You may want to ask your dentist what he recommends that you do as I am not a tooth specialist, but I stick to the saying, “Moderation in all things.” I only do this when I feel like I need a deep cleaning maybe once or twice a month along with my regular brushing and flossing routine. Thanks for commenting! I hope that helps!

Hi Vicki. You can find Activated Charcoal on Amazon.com I actually linked “activated charcoal” in my post to the exact kind that I used. You could try calling your local Pharmacy to see if they have it there as well. Good luck! I know that you will like it!

With the link in your post to the “activated charcoal” on Amazon, it comes in capsules. Do you break the capsules open and then use the powder inside that to brush your teeth with?

    Thanks,

    That’s so funny!
My mom used to do that as a kid for they had no money, and I never believed it acutally works!
I need that for I got the same problem after using a powerful mouthwash and drinking wine and tea, my teeth have never been so yellow!

Its really not that bad! I held my tongue back because I was nervous to taste it, but eventually I relaxed. It tastes way better than baking soda! Not much taste to it. So worth it!

How did you get the activated charcoal off of your teeth? Did you brush again, swish some mouthwash, or what?

I imagine that you could do it with braces because it is not bleaching the teeth. It’s more like a deep cleaning. Always consult your orthodontist as we are not dental professionals though:)

Let me start off by saying that I have no papers on my wall or claim any dental profession but I did sleep at a holiday inn once
First of all you can purchase activated charcoal wherever they sell aquarium supply’s , it will need to be pulverized in your processor
Mix powder and very little water ( or for a real kick – hydrogen peroxide) you are trying to make a paste
Brush as you normally would then let set for 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse as good as possible then brush again with just a damp brush until clean
I do this two times a week as a rule but occasionally more as needed
Ps I have 2 brushes for this process 1 for brushing and 1 for finishing

Does this method ruin tooth enamel or do any other damage? I’m so eager to try but want to know any health implications.

Don’t replace your toothpaste with it, just use it occasionally and you will be fine. Its no more harsh than the stuff used on your teeth at the dentist when getting cleaned. It is a great way to clean off buildup. Consult your dentist on your next visit!

do you think the activated charcoal trick will work with teeth that have really yellowed over the years and have build up near the gum line? do you or anyone have any tips on how to keep your gums and teeth healthy.

I don’t know if it would whiten them completely, but it sure does brighten them up. If getting your teeth cleaned at the dentist helps, this might help. It feels like a deep clean to me.

Regular dental cleanings and twice daily home brushing and flossing will keep your teeth healthy and clean. The tartar build up around the gum line needs to be professionally removed. Consulting local dental or hygienist schools can be considerably cheaper than a regular dentist if finances are of concern.

I will show this post to a family member who’s really got some yellow teeth. I can probably find the activated charcoal capsules at GNC or another health food outlet. I’m gonna take some before & after shots too!
